The Egyptian Museum in Cairo's Tahrir Square is the country's oldest antiquities museum, holding one of the world's most important collections of pharaonic artifacts. Its halls of royal mummies, statues, and everyday treasures make it a classic stop on Cairo city tours and day trips from the Red Sea coast.
Opened in 1902, the Egyptian Museum is a landmark in its own right, its red façade and crowded galleries packed with more than a century of discoveries. While some collections have moved to the Grand Egyptian Museum, Tahrir's museum remains rich in royal statuary, sarcophagi, and the famed Royal Mummies.
It's usually visited on a guided Cairo tour, often alongside the Pyramids of Giza and Islamic Cairo. A licensed guide is especially useful here, helping make sense of densely packed galleries that aren't always clearly labelled.
