About Luxor Temple

Unlike most Egyptian temples dedicated to a god, Luxor Temple was devoted to the rejuvenation of kingship and once hosted the great Opet Festival. An avenue of sphinxes — recently restored — originally connected it to Karnak, a short distance north.

Luxor Temple is usually included on guided Luxor tours and Nile cruise itineraries, often paired with Karnak. Many visitors prefer the late afternoon and evening, when softer light and floodlighting bring the carvings and colossi to life.
